11 family-friendly activities near Solothurn

As you could see from my posts, we spent a lot of time in the canton of Solothurn. Well, no wonder – it´s not so far from where we live 🙂 And although some “attractions” are not as Swiss-well-known as in the canton of Bern or elsewhere, yet (or that is why) we liked it here and I would definitely recommend them for the next family trip. So where to set off around Solothurn?

NOTE: Almost all headlines are clickable. You can click through to read original (and more detailed) post.

1. Solothurn

How could it be possible not to start with “capital” of the canton? The smallest children will probably appreciate the large playground you find a bit behind Baseltor. For those who are not afraid of the heights, I definitely recommend climbing the stairs to the tower of the St. Ursen’s cathedral. You´ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the surroundings. You can also take advantage of the services of the local tourist office and take a guided tour where you will learn a lot of interesting information about the city. In case of the bad weather, you can visit well made and very interesting Naturmuseum.

2. Schloss Waldegg

In the immediate vicinity of the city, you will find an adorable French-style chateau with a baroque garden. We were here during the “Swiss Castle Day” and the children were thrilled by the tour with a crazy scientist with a time machine 🙂 Due to the end of the tourist season, the opening hours of the museum inside the castle will be limited from the beginning of November, so I recommend checking the websites – here.

3. Verenaschlucht

Perfect is to combine a visit to the city and the castle with an unpretentious walk through the gorge of the Verenabach brook. This place has a really magical atmosphere.

4. Grenchenberg

Those who like hiking can put their children in its secrets on the Grencherberg hill. The pleasant circular trail, created for small tourists, will delight you with a look at a chain of rocky cliffs.

5. Weissenstein

Another nice trail along the ridge of the Jura mountain range. Additionally, the kids will certainly be excited by a ride with a cable car and learn about a solar system on the “Planetenweg” trail.

6. Altreu- European Stork Village

Not far from Solothurn in Altreu, you will find an incredible number of stork pairs having their baby storks in the spring months. The best time to visit is, however, in July, when storks fly out of their nests.

7. The Aare River cruise

You can get to the above mentioned Altreu, not only by ca but also by boat. It is one of the stops when cruising from Biel to Solothurn. The cruise on the tranquil river itself is a very pleasant experience.

8. Burgäschisee

The whole of Switzerland is interwoven with cycle trails, and of course, there are also plenty in the canton of Solothurn. You can take a bike ride to the picturesque Lake Burgäschisee, which was inhabited many millennia ago.

9. Lüterkofen pumpkin farm

In the fall you mustn´t miss a visit to the Weyeneth family farm in the village of Lüterkofen. Kids will surely be enthusiastic about the mazes and labyrinths, which is a part of a treasure hunt.

10. Jura – world of coffee

Not only for coffee lovers, I recommend a visit to a traditional Swiss company that specializes in the production of automated coffee machines for households. Here you will find interesting information about the history of the coffee and the children will be delighted with the presents that are prepared for them at the end of the tour. And of course, you can enjoy a cup of coffee from a wide range of coffee specialties.

11. Skiing on Balmberg

The Pleasant ski resort, suitable for beginners skiers. There is a ski rental, a ski school, a children’s slope and a lot of fun to enjoy here as well as non-skiers because there is a place for tobogganing. In addition to the ski slope, the rope park is here for more adventurous.

Maybe you ask why my listing contains 11 items, which is quite an uncommon number for lists of any kind? Because the number 11 is Solothurn’s symbolic number. Learn more in my post about 11 interesting facts you probably didn´t know about Solothurn.

How do you like this list of places? Is there anything you’ve ever visited and you´d recommended to others? Or are you just going to go? Either way, share your experiences in the comments! I look forward to them!
