10 hikes in the Emmental that you should definitely try

Originally, I have intended to post this article sometime in April, because March is still perfect for skiing and winter hiking in the Swiss mountains. However, as the ski lifts have been closed with immediate effect, there is nothing left to think about other alternatives. And since in the lowlands spring is already slowly opening its arms and some of the lower hills have not seen the snow well for several weeks, I put together for you an overview of ten hikes in my beloved Emmental, which are away from the crowds of tourists and they are doable with children. See for yourself!

NOTE: clicking on the headline will take you to the article with hike details.

1. Flüeweg Burgdorf

Flüeweg is a route that runs through the forest above Burgdorf – on the rocky “cliffs” that are so typical of this town, also called the “Gateway to Emmental”.

LENGTH: 3.5 km

2. Signau – Blaseflue – Moosegg

Moosegg is a hill near Langnau in Emmental, with wonderful views of the surrounding area. At the viewpoint of Blaseflue, you can learn about local history and also roast something good.

3. Burgdorf – Rothöhe – Oberburg

The route leads mainly through the woods to the popular Rothöhe restaurant over Oberburg. There are two alternatives to return to Burgdorf (and you won’t make a mistake choosing any of them 😉 ).

4. Hasle – Egge – Sumiswald

The 8.5 km long hike leads from Hasle-Rüegsau via Egg to Sumiswald. In addition to the magnificent Emmental countryside, you will also enjoy views of the Alps.

6.Bänklirundgang Sumiswald

In the vicinity of Sumiswald there are two loop routes under this name, thus loosely translated as “Bench Route”. The benches along the route are ideal for relaxing as well as for great views.

7. Kambly Entdeckerpfad

This theme trail will guide you and your children through the forest and the picturesque Emmental village of Trubschachen. At the end, a treasure chest in the traditional Kambly biscuit shop awaits children. However, they need a four-digit code to open the lock. They get it when solving various tasks along the route.

LENGTH: 3.5 km

LOOP: yes

WITH STROLLER: no

8. Chuderhüsi Lookout Tower

Even the smallest can handle the approx. one kilometer route from the Chuderhüsi restaurant to the wooden lookout tower, which was rebuilt after the fire with the help of locals in 2002.

LENGTH: 2 km

LOOP: yes

WITH STROLLER: yes

9. Chrüzflue Krauchthal

The route leads to a viewpoint on a sandstone rock that rises above the village of Krauchthal. If you would like to extend the hike, you can follow the “Sandstein Lehrpfad”, a nature trail that leads through four deserted sandstone quarries, where the sandstone has been mined since the Middle Ages.

10. Lüderenalp

The Lüderenalp area is located between the villages Wasen (Sumiswald) on the one hand and Langnau im Emmental on the other. Lüderenalp is located on several hiking trails. It is mostly on narrow paths through the hilly countryside of Emmental.

  • The Emmental is such a scenic and peaceful area. I love the big wooden farm houses with the colorful flowers on the windowsills.
I have heard of most villages but never done any of those hikes. I have, however, visited Kambly 😉
