Skiing with kids: Mürren-Schilthorn

Schilthorn is a fairly large ski resort, towering impressively over the Lauterbrunnen valley and the village of Mürren near Interlaken. It is part of the extensive Jungfrau ski region, which includes also Grindelwald-Wengen and Grindelwald-First. We took advantage of a promotion whereby up to three children aged 6 – 15 ski free of charge if an adult buys a day or afternoon ski pass.

Where is Mürren-Schilthorn and how to get there?

The Jungfrau ski area and the Muerren-Schilthorn ski resort are located in central Switzerland, south of Interlaken. The ski resorts of the Jungfrau are connected to the rest of Switzerland by an excellent railway system via Interlaken. Trains from Interlaken Ost make the journey to Lauterbrunnen in 30min, leaving every 30min. In Lauterbrunnen, you have to change to bus 141, which takes you directly to the bus stop “Stechelberg, Schilthornbahn”.

By car: From Bern, the journey takes just over an hour. Drive the highway in the direction of Interlaken, then take the exit to Wilderswil/Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen. Then head for Lauterbrunnen and continue through the valley to Stechelberg. A large metered lot is right next to the valley station of the Schilthorn cable car. Parking for 4-8 hours costs 7 francs, for the whole day 10 francs.

Mürren-Schilthorn ski area slope plan

The ski area is open from 04.12.2021 to 18.04.2022. Opening hours: 08.00 to 16.15.

As you can see, the ski area is rather complex making navigation for first-time visitors a challenge. The Schilthorn peak itself, after which the resort above Mürren is named, rises quite off to the side of most of the slopes and has a single black run leading from it. The only way to connect the Birg area towards Mürren is again via the black slope. For complete beginners, the slopes on the Allmendhubel are very suitable. There are several snowparks in the area, which are marked as clothing sizes: from S to XL – depending on their size and the difficulty of the elements. There is also a timed slalom section.

To get to the top of the Schilthorn by cable car, you have to change three times, the journey takes 32 minutes.

Ski passes tarifs

As I wrote above, children from 6 to 15 years old ski for free on Saturdays if they are accompanied by their parents with a ski pass. The price of a full-day ski pass for an adult is 69 CHF. So for a family with two adults and up to three children, a full day’s skiing on Saturday will cost 138 CHF.

Outside of Saturdays, a full-day ski pass for a child costs 33 francs, and for juniors (16-19 years old) it costs 53 francs.

As of winter 2018/19, the ski area is part of the Top4-Skipass offer. The four largest ski areas in the canton of Bern (Adelboden-Lenk, Gstaad, Jungfrau Ski Region, and Meiringen-Hasliberg) offer a single season pass, with which you can ski at any of these areas. More information here.

Schilthorn – Piz Gloria

The Schilthorn Peak (2,970 m above sea level), nicknamed Piz Gloria after the film In Her Majesty’s Service, attracts visitors from all over the world all year round thanks to its successful Bond Experience exhibition. I wrote about it here:

Schilthorn Piz Gloria – Visiting James Bond

From the top, there is a black run where the famous Inferno run starts. This competition takes place e in late January every year and is a 15 km long run up to Lauterbrunnen. It was first held in 1928 by Sir Arnold Lunn, the pioneer of Alpine skiing in Mürren.

Birg

At an altitude of 2,677 m above sea level lies the Birg rock massif, where, in addition to the bistro, you will also find the SKYLINE WALK platform, which is located above the vertical cliff and offers beautiful views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The steepest ski slope in the Jungfraujoch region, Diretissima, starts right at the station and is 400 meters long, 50 meters wide, and has a slope gradient of 88% (black slope 9). This can of course be bypassed – there is the wide blue slope No.11. This will take you to the Muttleren chairlift, which takes you up to Obere Hubel. From here you can take the red or black slope to the Kandahar chairlift. Alternatively, you can take the black slope 16 down to the Allmendhubel area below.

Allmendhubel

For small children and beginners, the area around the Allmendhubel peak is great. Next to the funicular valley station is the ski school and at the upper funicular station, there is a children’s slope with fun elements.

PS: Allmendhubel is also beautiful in summer – you will find a lovely playground here.

Maulerhubel – Winteregg

A two-seater chairlift takes you to the Maulerhubel (1 930 m). From there you can already see one of the snow parks and a timed slalom section that you can try out. Variable red and blue slopes with another snowpark lead you to Winteregg (1 582 m).

Schiltgrat

In 1998, a four-seater chairlift was put into operation from Mürren to the Schiltgrat (2,145 m). Both red and blue runs lead from here.

Summary

  • Large ski resort with beautiful alpine scenery.
  • The ski area is quite extensive and first-timers may find it a bit of a challenge to find their way around.
  • The pistes and slopes are varied, suitable for beginners and advanced skiers, snowboarders and free-riders.
  • Non-skiers will enjoy James Bond Experience, Brig Thrill Walk, tobogganing and winter hiking in the area.
