Hiking with children: through the Rhine Gorge from Valendas to Versam

The Rhine River Gorge, sometimes called the “Swiss Grand Canyon“, is one of the most impressive places in the canton of Graubünden. We had planned the route of this hike as part of our weekend stay at Peaks Place. It was initially supposed to be once as long and lead up to Trin Mulin just off Lake Crestasee, but we cut it short due to the less-than-ideal weather. But we still enjoyed the less than five kilometers. At least I did, because it was my birthday, I was wearing hiking boots, and I had my (probably slightly less happy) family around me (“Mom, do we really have to go hiking when it’s raining? Yes!”)

Arrival to Valendas

The hike starts at the Valendas-Sagogn railway station, reached by the Rhaetian railway from Chur or Disentis/Muster. You can also use the unique PostBus Cabriolet to reach Valendas. This minibus connects both sides of the Rhine Gorge and runs four times daily from 29 June to 25 August 2024, Friday to Sunday from 30 August to 20 October 2024. It starts in Laax (10.10 am from Laax, Post stop) and takes you to Valendas via Sagogn. Due to the bus size, you must reserve your seats, at least one hour before departure. More information here.

The famous Glacier Express also passes through Valendas. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you’ll see it too.

Trail

First, you go over the level crossing (yes, we waited at that one before the Glacier Express crossed) and after it you turn right and head along the tracks on the Ruinaulta themed trail towards Versam/Safien station.

After a few minutes, you can “turn” through the greenery to the river. In summer, the sandy and rocky beaches must be amazing.

In just one kilometer, you reach the barbecue area. You will also find the first stop of the themed trail. If you spin the wheel for about 30 seconds, you will bring to life the local “Fountain-Mermaid”, who will tell you about the unique landscape full of interesting flora and fauna.

After a short time, you will reach the Carrerabach-Brücke railway bridge, where there is another information board.

The trail leaves the river from the railway bridge, and you follow a wide gravel path up a gentle hill.

At the route’s highest point, about halfway up, you will have a beautiful view of the Vorderrhein (Front Rhine), a rafter’s paradise in summer with a beautiful view of the rugged rock formations. Here, you will find another place to barbecue

A pleasant descent – first through the forest and then along a rubble embankment will take you to the Versam – Safien railway station, from where you will take the train back to Valendas.

Summary

  • The route is less than 5 kilometres long.
  • The route is not suitable for a stroller.
  • I would recommend going in the opposite direction, from Versam to Valendas. If the weather is nice, you can end your hike on the rocky beaches by the river.
  • Don’t forget to pack your barbecue equipment – various barbecue spots are along the route.
